Alsace Bike Hire - Including Local Transport
Bike hire
For
your self guided bicycle tour you may need a bike hire shop to rent a bike. Such shops are found mainly in the cities of Alsace. Some are accessible on the web. Depending on hire bike
quality you should expect to pay €7-10 per day. Tandems for rent are not common but can be arranged. If the staff speak a language other than French it will probably be German, but some speak English. They will patiently wait as you stumble through any school-boy/girl French. All the hire shops we describe are orientated around the various Alsace bike routes and will carry maps etc. Have a look at our Cycling Tips advice on bike hire before you make the deal with the hire shop.
To help you on your self guided bike tour we thought we would point out an error we made on bike hire. In all languages there are false-friends, words that mean one thing in one language and another thing in another language. In French "pannier" describes the basket (wire or straw) that fits on the front or rear of the bike to hold the odd book and bottle of wine. "Pannier" in English describes the large luggage bag mounted (often in pairs) on the rear of a bike to allow you to travel between hotels. Be aware!

Bike maintenance
During
your Alsace bike tour we hope you will not need this, but if you do most of the bike hire
shops will provide a maintenance service (at a fee) even for
each others' bikes. At the very least we recommend that you can repair a puncture, see our Cycling Tips, though of course, with modern tyres, punctures are less common. We also recommend a couple of books (a light one and a heavy one) of mybikeguide repairs.
