network of bicycle routes is wide ranging. Our suggested Alsace route can be seen
below or you could explore alternatives on the Haut-Rhin and
Bas-Rhin web sites. Generally speaking, it is not too difficult to obtain the information you need from these sites,
but set aside enough time to access it all. The cycle paths are
mostly traffic free but you may be riding on the road in the villages
themselves. Nearly all their maps come with an altitude graph.
The suggested route is
circular (clockwise), starting from the Quai de Louis Pasteur in
Strasbourg. Villages along the Alsace Wine Route (AWR) are indicated
with green. A short detour is offered from Colmar going south which covers a bit more of the AWR. There is also a section of the route
which is unusually hilly and this area is indicated with red. If any problems arise and a member of your party can no longer ride,
please note that a railway runs through the area. The accommodation
code below refers to numbers of hotels or similar in each
village/town. Places of interest a short way off the bike route are highlighted in blue.
When you are on the bike path you will see bike path signs which move
from time to time these will show the most bicycle friendly route which
may well pass through the vines rather than down the main street.
A Google map is provided at Alsace Map to guide you through the tricky bits.
