Puglia Bike Hire - Including Local Transport

Bike hire

For your self-guided tour you may need a bike hire shop.  Before you approach a hire shop have a look at the advice in our Bike Guide.  It is not the law in Italy that you must wear a helmet and you will see fewer than 50% of riders wearing them.
There aren't many bike hire companies in the area.  If you want to Google to try and find more than those listed below, then we suggest you use "bicycle hire Puglia" or "noleggio bici" together with the relevant town name in the search box.  You will see many hotels offering bikes for hire.  It's up to you but we would recommend hiring from a specialist bike shop.  Some of these bike hiring companies are also tour providers:

Bike maintenance

During your tour we hope you will not need this, but if you do the bike retailers in each large town will provide a maintenance service (at a fee)Check our puncture repair video at MyBikeGuide before you go.  We also recommend a couple of guides on how to repair a bike, one of which is light enough to take with you.

Left luggage

In Italian "deposito bagagli" exists at major railway stations including

  • Lecce station
  • "Carpe Diem" at Brindisi station

Bike transport

Train and bike

The TrenItalia website is a little difficult to use but the company generally welcomes bikes on trains, allowing them on local trains, although they do levy a charge.  The rules about bikes on “National” trains are both more complicated and more restrictive but they are more flexible if you transport your bike in a bag. Look out for bike symbols on the timetables

  • Regional trains

    • Bikes are allowed on Urban and Regional trains marked in the timetables with a bike icon
    • €3.5 for the bike ticket which is valid for 24 hours from validation (in the machine at the entrance to the platform)
    • 2nd class ticket at least is required for the rider
    • carry the bike in a bag and it travels for free
  • International trains

    • Bikes are allowed on some international trains (look for the bike icon)
    • €12 required for the bike ticket and the rider needs a ticket too
    • carry the bike in a bag and it travels for free
